Life is a fluid force which catapults us through highs and lows that never ceases to amaze. There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state to another. It is only through the deepest grief that we are able to achieve the greatest happiness, and only through life’s experiences do we realize the full potentiality of existence. I do not look at human beings as insignificant machines, made to be kept in action by a foreign force, to accomplish an unvarying succession of motions, to do a fixed amount of work, and then to fall to pieces at death, but as a being of free spiritual powers; and I place little value on any culture but that which aims to bring out these, and to give them perpetual impulse and expansion. It is only through the invariable acceptance of our limitation do we realize the adversity placed upon us by society. What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly; it is only our dearness that gives everything its value. This is why I love those who that can smile in times of trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. I admire those who do not shrink when times become abysmal, whose heart is firm, where ones conscience approves of action and conduct, and who will pursue principle unto death. Nobody ever becomes happy searching for the elements that happiness consists of; they become disembogued with the outer sphere of inter-elation and lose sight of the real meaning of life: to live whilst one can, and to enjoy the moment, while it still is possible.
